How to Become a Boilermaker
There’s no shortage of work for people who know how to use their hands. Whether you’re new to the trades or looking to level up from general labor, becoming a boilermaker opens doors to long-term stable employment in industries that aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
This guide breaks down what the job involves, how much you can make, and how to get started—even if you don’t have experience. You’ll also learn how staffing agencies can help you get on a job site quickly and start earning right away.
What Does a Boilermaker Do?
Boilermakers are skilled tradespeople who build, install, and maintain the large metal containers and systems that power industrial America.
You may also see this role listed under titles like:
- Boilerhouse Mechanic
- Boilermaker Fitter
- Boilermaker I or Boilermaker II (entry vs. experienced level)
On a typical job site, boilermakers work closely with welders, pipefitters, construction supervisors, and engineers. It’s collaborative, hands-on work. Day-to-day tasks include:
- Reading blueprints and technical drawings
- Cutting and shaping large metal plates and structural components
- Welding, bolting, and fitting pieces together
- Conducting safety checks on equipment and tools
- Working alongside inspectors to ensure everything meets code
How Much Does a Boilermaker Make?
-
Boilermaker Helper or Entry-Level: $18 - $25 per hour
-
Experienced Boilermaker: $20 - $45 per hour
Boilermaker Work Life
Wondering what you’re actually signing up for? Here’s how a typical shift plays out:
- Arrive at the job site early and review your assignment
- Pull up blueprints or technical drawings to understand the work plan
- Measure and cut metal plates or pipes
- Assemble boiler parts, tanks, or pressure vessel components
- Work with your crew to install equipment
- Assist with heavy lifting and positioning of large equipment
- Conduct safety checks on equipment
- Clean the work area and properly store materials before leaving
Boilermakers work in a range of environments – fabrication shops, outdoor construction sites, and inside industrial plants. Safety is a huge aspect. Employers expect workers to follow strict safety protocols at all times. Schedules are typically full-time, and many projects run on consistent shifts. Short-term assignments are also available.
Boilermaker Job Outlook
Industries like energy production, manufacturing, and infrastructure development all depend on large-scale industrial systems. They require skilled installation, inspections, and ongoing maintenance. These aren't seasonal industries, they run year-round and need qualified people to keep operations running. Even if you’re just focused on getting through this week, this path can open doors.
Why Use a Staffing Agency to Become a Boilermaker
Breaking into any skilled trade can feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. You might have the drive and the physical ability, but no idea what employers are looking for. A staffing agency can actively help you get placed and set you up to succeed. This means:
- Resume help
- Faster access to job openings
- Guidance on certifications and safety requirements
- Some locations offer in-house certifications
If you want a long-term career in trade, working with a staffing agency can help you get placed quickly and consistently. Getting started in the field as soon as possible helps you gain real experience.
What Workers Are Saying
"They contacted me for a certification that brought me employment the next day. I was paid within the hour upon completion of the task."
"My experience has been just great. I signed up for work approximately two weeks ago. Took 30 minutes. Within 24 hours I was on a job site. Been working steadily ever since."
