Want to work at concerts, banquets, conferences or other events?

Event jobs can include setup, cleanup, serving guests, moving supplies, and many other tasks. You may not need years of experience to get started, but a few skills can help you stand out.

Here are seven event staff skills employers are looking for:

1. Good Communication

Event workers need to listen and follow directions.  You may get instructions from a supervisor, answer guests’ questions, or work with other team members. Good communication helps everyone know what needs to get done. If you aren’t sure what you’re supposed to do, ask.

2. Teamwork

Events take a lot of people working together. You may be setting up tables while another worker moves equipment or prepares food. Be willing to help your team and do your part. A good even worker doesn’t just focus on their own task. They help the whole team get the job done.

3. Staying Calm When It's Busy

Events can move fast. Guests may arrive all at once. A room may need to be set up quickly. Your supervisor may ask you to switch tasks. Stay calm, listen, and focus on what needs to happen next. Being able to work in a busy environment is a useful skill for many event jobs.

4. A Flexible Schedule

Many events happen at night or on weekends. Your shift may also start early for setup or end late after cleanup. Before accepting an event job, make sure you understand the hours and have a reliable way to get to and from work. Being available for different shifts may give you more chances to work.

5. Being Ready for Physical Work

Some event jobs can keep you moving for most of your shift. Depending on the job, you may need to stand for long periods, move tables, carry supplies, stock items or help clean up. Pay attention to the job description to understand what the work requires before accepting the job.

6. Good Customer Service

Some event jobs put you around guests. Be polite, helpful, and professional. If someone asks a question you can’t answer, find a supervisor, or another team member who can help. You don’t have to be the most outgoing person in the room. Being respectful and willing to help can go a long way.

7. Being Reliable and Organized

Showing up matters. Arrive on time, follow instructions, and let your supervisor know as soon as possible if there’s a problem. You may also need to keep track of supplies, equipment, or other items during an event. Staying organized can help the entire shift run smoothly.

Can You Get an Event Job With No Experience?

Some event staff jobs may not require previous experience.

Skills you've learned at other jobs can still help. Customer service, cleaning, food service, warehouse work and general labor can all give you experience that may transfer to event work.
