What to Do After a Job Interview: 5 Steps That Help Blue-Collar Workers
You just walked out of a job interview or finished your application at a staffing agency. Now what?
Most workers go home and wait and that’s exactly where opportunities get lost. Whether you interviewed with an employer or just registered with a labor staffing agency like Labor Finders, here are five things to do right after a job interview to improve your chances of getting hired.
1. Be Ready for a Callback or Follow-Up Interview
After you complete your application – whether on paper or electronically at the office, the process isn’t done. A Labor Finders recruiter may reach out to schedule a brief follow-up interview or orientation before placing you on an assignment. Here's how to be ready:
- Keep your phone on and your voicemail clear
- Respond to calls and texts as quickly as possible
- Know your availability before they call
2. Make Sure Your Phone Is On and You're Easy to Reach
This sounds obvious, but it’s one of the most common reasons workers miss out on assignments. After registering with a staffing agency, recruiters often fill jobs fast. If you’re hard to reach, they’ll move on to the next person on the list.
3. Reflect On Your Skills and Be Ready to Talk About Them
Not everyone has a formal list of references and that’s okay. What matters most in a labor staffing interview or orientation is being able to speak clearly about what you can do. Before your follow-up call or in-person meeting, take a few minutes to think through:
- What types of work have you done?
- What equipment, tools, or machinery have you operated?
- Do you have any certifications - forklift, OSHA, flagger, CPR?
- What industries have you worked in?
You don't need a polished resume to answer these questions. You just need to know your own experience well enough to talk about it confidently.
4. Show Up Early and Dress for the Job
If you're called back for a follow-up interview or orientation, treat it like the job itself. Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early
- Dress appropriately: you don't need a suit. But clean, work appropriate clothes and sturdy boots if you have them are a great idea.
- Bring what you need: have your ID, certifications, and any paperwork you were asked to complete ready to go.
5. Keep Applying
Keep applying to other open positions and stay active in your job search. In labor and construction work, things move fast – a position can be filled in a day, a project can get delayed and push a start date back by weeks. If you’ve registered with Labor Finders, follow up with the office to let them know when you’re available.
